Beth from This Is Us

Character Analysis

Beth appears to be a strong ISTJ. I know we all love Randy and Beth’s relationship. Beth is a confident woman who values family and takes her role as a mother and wife very seriously. She doesn’t play around and she will protect her family in a heartbeat. In season one when she believes Randy’s biological father is taking advantage of him she doesn’t hesitate to let him know and then realizes she was too hasty with her words. She also works hard to support her husband and encourages him to slow down and relax. They balance each other out very well. They solve conflict situations well and show respect for each other without getting defensive. Beth is not very intuitive or the warm, “feely” type. Towards the end of the second season Randall makes a comment to her that he is the “heart” and she is the “head”.

The show hasn’t focused on Beth’s past that much. We know from season one that she grew up in a household with 14 people – Parents, four siblings, aunts, and some cousins with only a three bedroom and one bathroom house. She expressed wanting to live alone as an adult because she couldn’t have her own space as a child. We also know her father died from bone cancer. She’s been through a lot in life, hopefully season three will provide more insight into her childhood and how she developed into the adult her character portrays on the show.
