I think Kate is a moderate ISFJ. The childhood bullying and trauma, including her father dying created a lot of insecurities and a lot of emotional pain. She struggles with self-worth and body images because she is overweight. It’s challenging trying to lose weight only to feel like you’re not making progress.
On the flip side she is somewhat assertive and knows how to stand up for herself (eg. kicking the teenage girl out of her car). Kate has a big heart and wants to help others. She’s organized and a hard worker; she seems like a concrete and literal person. I wonder if she would display more extroverted characteristics if she had more confidence.
In season one, episode ten, at her gastric bypass surgery appointment, Kate admits she tried depression meds (Prozac) but stopped because it caused weight gain. Kate’s mother feels responsible for her daughter’s obesity and directly asks Kate if she was responsible…. Kate tells her mother, “I don’t know”. Rebecca struggles with feeling like a failure and wants to take responsibility for a problem that’s existed for most of Kate’s life.
[Note – The twins losing a brother during birth was another form of early trauma. They shared the womb with their brother for nine months. Right after they were born their mother was mourning the loss of the third baby in addition to adopting a new baby from a different ethnic background. This added to the dynamic change in the household, especially since it was only a little over a decade since the civil rights movement.]
